Switchvox AA60

If you have been following any of my posts on the Switchvox AA60 you will appreciate some of this information.

My previous postings can be read here…

http://www.8774e4voip.com/blog/2008/03/more-on-switchvox-aa60.html

——–

After a bit more research I found that it might be a good idea to elaborate on a few of the features available on the new Switchvox AA60.

Switchvox AA60 Provisioning tool:
From what I understand there will be a provisioning element in the system that will afford the the PBX administrator to provision extensions via a handy dandy web UI tool. This will be a “Pay to Play” solution that is billed to the customer under the same subscription model as the current support mechanism and will NOT be available as an update for current silver, gold, and platinum users. — If you want this feature you’ll have to pay for it separately. Hey Digium Correct me if I am wrong.

User Search Feature:
I touched on this feature in my last post not fully understanding the update in general. From what I Understand now, this addition to Switchvox 3.5 will work much like using Google’s desktop search tool or Windows Vista OS search feature…. I guess it will work like this… there will be a search box on the Switchvox AA60 under the manage extensions section where you can start typing an end-users name from there it will start populating any possible matches so that you do not have to type in the entire name – it will start populating possible matches immediately based on the first letters entered. Again, Digium- Correct me if I am wrong.

More on the Switchvox AA60
Sunday, March 23, 2008
Switchvox 3.5 and Beyond:

As you may have heard, the folks at Digium have released yet another product designed specifically to meet the needs of small businesses everywhere. The latest being a small form factor device that will ship pre-loaded with the award winning Switchvox SOHO or Switchvox SMB Software. This new offering will replace their tower PC solutions and carry the latest software features available only in version 3.5.

What’s New in the Switchvox AA60 and Switchvox 3.5?

Phone Provisioning Tool:
Switchvox SMB 3.5 will now have built in phone configuration through an integrated phone management tool that will allow for automatic detection of handsets on the network. In addition to this benefit the Switchvox 3.5 version will also feature an updated admin suite that will carry different levels of access for users slated with the task of administering the Switchvox PBX.

Inbound and Outbound Calls:
Also new in 3.5 will be an updated “Incoming Calls” utility… An enhancement over previous versions the updated page will let users more easily map Direct Inward Dialing numbers (DIDs) to users, IVRs, and Call Queues with the system. The new 3.5 Software will also provide the ability to set outbound caller id resources on a per user extension basis, streamlining the current Switchvox SMB methodology.

Enhanced Phonebook Panel:
BRAVO! – Now users can add multiple contacts to their switchboard simultaneously… This is a major improvement to the current switchvox SMB functionality. Previously, end-users would have to traverse multiple screens to add users one at a time. 3.5 eliminates this by allow the user to grab multiple contacts at once.

End-User Search Feature:
Although I haven’t seen this in action, Digium’s description of this feature leads me to believe that when you are on the “Manage Extensions” screen there will be a search bar for typing in the users name for easy modification. The PRE Switchvox 3.5 version require that you first select the extension type from a pull down menu then scan through a list of end-users… This will eliminate the need to browse multiple extension pages while utilizing the CTRL + F function of your browser.

Asterisk PCI cards – Warranty info
Thursday, March 20, 2008
The current Asterisk PCI card landscape consists of three major vendors all vying for sales in the same space. Some view Digium as the obvious choice having created the market while others look to companies like Sangoma and Rhino equipment for hardware.

In the past few months all of the vendors have made changes to their warranty policies, the following is an outline of what you might expect to get from them.

Digium- Under the Risk-Free Guarantee, Digium will refund the purchase price of any qualifying Digium product(s) for any customer that is not 100% satisfied with the performance of the Digium product(s) they purchased. From what I understand this refund comes direct from Digium and doesn’t require us to handle any of this transaction.

More On Digium’s ESP

To qualify, the customer must:
—register the product at www.digium.com/register.
—contact Digium Tech Support within 30 days of installation.
—allow a minimum of five business days to resolve trouble.
—provide the original invoice for the purchase. During the troubleshooting / technical support —-process, the customer should expect to
—use a Genuine Asterisk® distribution.
—disclose server details (model, revision, Linux® distribution, etc).
—provide Digium Tech Support remote access to your server via an ssh connection.
—cooperate with reasonable testing to show symptom(s) and/or test a provided solution.

All Digium products are covered except for the following products which DO NOT qualify for this offer:
—TE110 single span T1/E1 PCI card, EOL
—TDM400 4-port analog PCI card, EOL
—S101i IAXy ATA

Sangoma’s Warranty:

New Sangoma hardware now comes with a lifetime warranty for replacement and repair from the date of purchase. We rigorously test all cards to ensure our customer always receive the highest quality products.

In the case that a customer believes they have a defective card, they should first contact our Technical Support at or call 1 800 388 2475.

If the card is defective, Sangoma will issue an RMA for repair or replacement. To help their customers quickly, they will need the following information before issuing an RMA:
—Serial number of all defective items
—Customer name
—Name of Company or Organization
—Shipping address
—Phone number
—Email
—Product name
—Quantity of items being returned

For lifetime warranty customers, this information should match your product registration.

Rhino Equipment’s Warranty:

Perhaps the best warranty in the industry has been provided by Rhino Equipment. This Arizona based company has raised the bar by providing its endusers with a SLA – Service Level Agreement.

Five-Year Warranty: The following Rhino products are covered by this warranty for a period of five years from the date of original retail purchase: all CB24, MiniDAX, MPC, IP24, and Ceros models.

One-Year Warranty: PC motherboards, memory cards, hard drives, data storage products which are not manufactured directly by Rhino. If the original manufacturer’s warranty is longer than 1 year, we will honor that warranty.

This warranty covers only repair or replacement of defective Rhino products, as provided above. Rhino is not liable for, and does not cover under warranty, any costs associated with servicing and/or the installation of Rhino products. Rhino will not discontinue support of its products, nor obsolete its products, as long as there are component materials available and there is reasonable customer demand for the products.

Free Technical Support:
If you experience difficulty during the installation or subsequent use of a Rhino product, you may contact Rhino’s Technical Support department prior to servicing your system. Rhino provides free English-language technical support to its customers worldwide for as long as you own the Rhino product.

Rhino Technical Support can be contacted directly by calling: +1 (480) 940-1826, option 4 during normal business hours in the United States, or by e-mail at: support@rhinoequipment.com.

All of the above – fantastic… But whenever I think of warranties I am always reminded of that scene from Tommy Boy

Remember this?

Tommy: Chicken wings! Let’s think about this for a sec, Ted, why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.

Ted Nelson: Go on, I’m listening.

Tommy: Here’s the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box ’cause he wants you to fell all warm and toasty inside.

Ted Nelson: Yeah, makes a man feel good.

Tommy: ‘Course it does. Why shouldn’t it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?

Ted Nelson: What’s your point?

Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn’t a crazy glue sniffer? “Building model airplanes” says the little fairy, well, we’re not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that’s all it takes. The next thing you know, there’s money missing off the dresser and your daughter’s knocked up, I seen it a hundred times.

Ted Nelson: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?

Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That’s all it is, isn’t it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer’s sake, for your daughter’s sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

Ted Nelson: Okay, I’ll buy from you.

Tommy: Well, that’s… What?

Wideband Voice Conferencing Appliance
WYDE Voice, a new startup venture backed by Free Conferencing Corp. founder and CEO David Erickson, today launched the industry’s first real-time voice conferencing appliances that support 16-bit, 16 kHz voice quality for an unparalleled user experience. Leveraging the Asterisk® platform, the new WYDE 16 kHz wide-band voice solution offers service providers and enterprise organizations the capability to deliver a broad range of affordable, high-quality audio conferencing solutions.

“Investing in innovation has always been my mantra,” said David Erickson, Founder and CEO, Free Conferencing Corporation of America. “When presented with the opportunity to offer an affordable, high-end 16 kHz voice quality product that bridges the gap between PSTN and VoIP, it made total sense to get behind this revolutionary technology. WYDE Voice introduces a new level of conferencing technology with unparalleled flexibility and reliability.”

WYDE Voice is the culmination of two years of research and development, and it brings high-quality voice to complex, multi-speaker and multi-listener environments. Utilizing Asterisk®, the new WYDE Voice appliances offer unsurpassed flexibility without sacrificing performance.

“We have developed these products to accommodate the needs of both service providers and enterprises to deliver conference services and applications that were once cost prohibitive,” said Michael Eastman, Vice President of Global Sales for WYDE Voice. “We are truly pushing the envelope with these turnkey products that will offer customizable features at the most cost effective price point on the market.”

Industry Analyst Perspective on the Potential of WYDE Voice

According to Eastman, the new models are available now with pricing for the VM1000 model starting at $160/port and $140/port for the VM3000 – a fraction of the cost of competitive bridges. In addition, preset modes such as reservation-less conferencing are installed on each appliance and can be easily tailored to meet business needs including specialized call flow or advanced features such as real-time conference control.

“This new product has the potential to really ‘disrupt’ and push the industry towards adopting newer technologies. The advent of wideband audio will have widespread appeal and fill a real need in the market,” said Marc Beattie, Partner & CSP Practice Manager, Wainhouse Research, LLC. “From a pure cost per port perspective, the WYDE Voice product could really shake things up, and that alone would be a disruptor.”

Service Providers, Channel Partners and Enterprises all Benefit from WYDE Voice

Eastman envisions a multitude of applications for the new WYDE Voice products including premium audio conferencing services, social networking site con calls, distance learning and online collaboration tools for webcasts, among others. “We will support this launch with an aggressive reseller program with attractive pricing for service providers, systems integrators, and VARs,” he added. “In addition, enterprises can easily take a WYDE Voice product and integrate it seamlessly within their organizations to conduct internal conference calling, especially those that are high volume users.” The new WYDE Voice models can accommodate from 500 to 7000 concurrent G.711 callers and up to 3000 16 bit/16 kHz iSAC callers.

Wild Device Alert: Unidata SQ-3100

VoIP over Wifi has always been something I have been interested in. On the surface it seems like the ultimate in communications. For the most part, most devices in this space have failed to live up to the promise or have been discontinued by the manufacturer as adoption rates seem slower than expected.

Enter the Unidata SQ-3100:

A unique concept in telephony period. Here is a device that has the promise of bringing the best of tree worlds together. 1. Wifi IP Telephony, 2. Video over Wifi, and 3. the ability to have a phone at your desk. All of these features are far from unique in their own right- However, bringing them together sets the pace for all other phones in the video space.

Switchvox fax from desktop

This articles describes how to send faxes from files on your desktop computer. Please ask your Switchvox administrator whether or not faxing is available on your Switchvox.

Sending a fax from your desktop computer requires some initial setup, and then it is a two-step process:

  1. Open a file in any application and print it to the Switchvox fax printer. This stores a copy of the file in your Switchvox Mailbox Fax Drafts folder.
  2. Go to the Switchvox Extension Suite Voicemail / Fax > Mailbox, select the Fax Drafts folder, and click the fax machine icon (at the top of the list) to send that file to a fax machine.

Setting up a Fax Printer

To make faxes for Switchvox, you need to first set up a generic printer on your desktop computer that you can use from any application. You only have to do this once.

Depending on your desktop environment there are several ways to set up a printer, but there is some specific information that you need to set up a Switchvox Fax Printer:

For Windows-based operating systems locations may vary, but the setup is basically the same.

  • Setup a new printer in the control panel.
  • Go to Start –> Control Panel –> Printers and Faxes –> Add Printer.
  • Click Next –> Select option ‘A Network Printer, or printer attached to another computer’ –> ‘Connect to a printer on the internet or on a home or office network’.  Then enter the following URL:
  • http://ip.of.pbx:631/printers/faxprinter   where ip.of.pbx is the IP/Hostname of your Switchvox.
  • Select ‘Next’ and on the following page choose ‘Use the specified user account’/
  • The username will be the user’s Switchvox extension number.
  • The password will be the extension’s numeric voicemail password.  Then hit ‘Ok’.
  • Next, you should be prompted to setup the printer drivers.  Use the following:
  • Make: Generic
  • Printers: MS Publisher Color Printer
  • Choose Next and Finish and you are all setup to print documents from any application to this fax printer.

For Linux- or Mac-based operating systems, enter this URL into a web browser on your computer:

http://localhost:631

  • You should be at your desktop’s CUPS admin suite
  • From the Home section, click Add Printer
  • Name: faxprinter (or whatever you choose)
  • Location: (example: Ourlivepbx) optional
  • Description: blank (optional)
  • Device: Internet Printing Protocol (http).
  • Device URI: http://ext:vmailpassword@ip.of.pbx:631/printers/faxprinter
  • example: http://101:12345@10.10.3.189:631/printers/faxprinter
  • ext is your extension (make sure you have an existing extension on the pbx already made)
vmailpassword is the password that you use for Switchvox voicemail and to login to the user suite.
ip.of.pbx is the address for your  Switchvox. This may be an IP address or a domain name.
  • Make: Generic
  • Model: Generic Postscript Printer
  • Click add printer and your desktop will prompt you for your root login

Sending a Fax

Now that you have your fax printer set up, you can create a fax from any application.

  1. In your document, select the Print option.
  2. In the Print dialog box, select the new ‘faxprinter’ as the printer to use, and print the file.
  3. In your Switchvox web suite, go to Voicemail / Fax > Mailbox.
  4. Select Fax:Drafts from the View Folder dropdown.
  5. Your Fax.Drafts folder is opened, and your drafts are listed.
The page you just printed is in the list. You can preview the first page, or download a PDF of the entire fax.
  6. Check the box for your fax
  7. Click the fax machine icon (at the top of the list). You are prompted to enter a fax number.
  8. Enter the number for the fax machine you want to send this fax to.
  9. Click Send Fax.
