SIP Trunking for the Switchvox AA60

There are many VoIP products in the market today- most of which offer the promise of reduced cost, better call control, and of course actual compatibility with Asterisk based products and services.

Recently, I came across a product from a smaller VoIP company in Detroit Michigan that I have been extremely impressed with. The Company is called VoIP of North America. Currently, they have several offerings that meet the need of residential customers as well as the demanding need of smaller office environments.

The product that we have been testing is there business unlimited plan. This program gives Switchvox AA60, Switchvox SOHO, and SMB users from what I can see an unlimited number of talk paths and free inbound- The base plan also offers 4000 outbound minutes and three virtual numbers for $29.99- Not bad at all-

SIP Trunk Setup in the AA60 – This is an area within Switchvox that couldn’t be any easier… Quite literally you can have outbound and inbound calls running through the SIP service and in to your happy ear in less than 2 mins… (assuming you’ve already set up your phones)

As you can see there are just six fields in the AA60 that will require your attention- SIMPLE!

Digium’s Switchvox AA60:
The Switchvox AA60 has been causing quite the stir in these parts… The new appliance not only offers a nice entry point to the IP Telephony market in terms of pricing but the fact that it is Asterisk based and now part of Digium’s line up makes it more desirable than ever…

The reason I am writing today is not to toot the Switchvox AA60 horn (Again 🙂 but to talk a bit about some of the popular misconceptions surrounding the application itself. For the most part I can safely say that most of the SIP endpoints we have tested work well under the Switchvox environment. However, some are simply are head and shoulders above most of the other devices that are not “Supported” in Switchvox. A perfect example of this will be the Polycom Kirk System. This mobility solution offers end-users the feature set expected in a desk top phone without the tether.

The Kirk Wireless System, It’s made by Polycom… Will it work?
The answer is a resounding yes as the KIRK Wireless Server 600v3 is a scalable solution capable of registering up to 1500 wireless users it is evidently an excellent choice for small, medium sized as well as large businesses within a wide range of vertical markets. With the option of deploying the KIRK Wireless Server 600v3 as either a single-cell or a multi-cell solution, it can be adjusted to fit the exact needs of the individual customer.

Our Test bed:
Our lab kit has consists of three elements. 1, Digium’s new Switchvox AA60 (Switchvox 3.5)… 2, The Polycom/Kirk Wireless System (5020 Starter bundle- MSRP $2499.99), and a single Polycom/Kirk DECT Repeater.

The bottom line is… this solution works on Switchvox… The phones themselves will require a support subscription for each extension as would any sip phone connected to the Switchvox AA60.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the processing of overly large ping packets and can be exploited to e.g. cause the web interface to become inaccessible.
The vulnerability is reported in version 3.3.6. Other versions may also be affected.

What is the SoundStation IP 7000?

What does “22 kHz” mean on the SoundStation IP 7000?
22 kHz refers to the high end of the frequency response that the SoundStation IP 7000 is capable of delivering. The 22 kHz frequency response is nearly CD quality audio, and is even greater than the capabilities of the human voice. The SoundStation IP 7000 is the first conference phone ever developed that has been capable of audio performance at up to 22 kHz.

Will every call on the Polycom SoundStation IP 7000 be in HD?
There are a number of factors in addition to the conference phone that determine the quality of the call. For example, calls to a traditional “narrow band” phone will be limited to the lower capabilities of that traditional phone. In addition, the IP PBX or hosted IP telephony service that the phone is connected to will also determine the audio quality of the call. Check with your IP PBX or hosted service provider for more information on what types of wideband, or HD Voice, services are supported.

My IP PBX only supports wideband audio codecs that offer 7 kHz voice quality, so what are the benefits of the 22 kHz capabilities of the SoundStation IP 7000?
Even though your IP PBX supports 7 kHz wideband codecs today, it may support higher quality codecs in the future. Purchasing the SoundStation IP 7000 provides investment protection and security in knowing you have purchased a platform that can support these higher quality codecs. The phone also matches the 22 kHz capabilities of Polycom HDX for future integration.
Is HD Voice on the SoundStation IP 7000 compatible with the IP 550 and IP 650?Yes, HD Voice calls can be established between those products. Check with your IP PBX or hosted service provider to verify support for HD Voice.

What if I call another phone that does not support HD Voice?
The call will be in narrowband, traditional phone quality if the other phone or audio conferencing service does not support wideband capabilities. Even in narrowband calls, the SoundStation IP 7000 offers the industry’s best narrowband audio quality on a conference phone.

Can multiple SoundStation IP 7000 units be connected together?
Yes, up to two of these conference phones can be connected, with all microphones and speakers active, and the call controlled via either phone.

Can additional MICS be added to two IP 7000s that are connected together?
Yes, up to two expansion microphones can be added to this configuration. The microphones on both the phones and expansion microphones will be active during a call.

Can the expansion microphones also be added to a single SoundStation IP 7000?
Yes, up to two expansion microphones can be added to a single phone.
Will the IP 4000 Mics work on the SoundStation IP 7000?
No, the expansion microphones for the SoundStation IP 7000 were specifically designed for the high-fidelity capabilities of the phone, and expansion microphones from other models cannot be used with it.

Can the SoundStation IP 7000 be connected to any video conferencing systems?
Later in 2008, the conference phone will be able to integrate with the Polycom HDX line of high-definition video conferencing systems. More details will be available at that time.

Finally! – Polycom launches the SoundStation IP 7000 High-Definition conferencing solution…

Polycom unveiled their next-generation IP conference phones… The new devices combine the power of SIP Polycom’s HD Voice technology.

Polycom’s Brian Phillips said that the new Soundstation IP 7000 and IP 6000, are sleek additions to Polycom’s lineup and are sure to spice up any IP deployment in the board room, or any conference room. He then added that the new SoundStation phones hit price points similar to their non-IP counterparts, enabling more companies to deploy VoIP devices in their conference rooms.

The Polycom SoundStation IP 7000 (shown above) features HD Voice with up to 22 KHz of CD-quality audio for improved clarity and performance. It also includes a large display with an XHTML micro-browser for IP applications, essentially turning the conference phone into an application platform for the room.

The new Polycom IP 7000 offers corporate directory access and three-way visual conferencing applications that let users manage conference users and features, while also enabling users to put participants hold or mute them on the call.
